Maddest Place on Earth by Jill Giese – I will be introducing Jill at an author presentation for her book on 17th October 2019 at 6.30 pm at the Melton Library and Learning Hub
Psychologist Jill Giese stumbled on a treasure trove of source material while researching the so-called epidemic of madness in 19th Century Melbourne.
In the years after the gold rush, many thousands of people were housed in the city’s asylums on various pretexts.
Famous journalist ‘A Vagabond’ worked undercover in Melbourne’s largest asylum for a month.
His reports for The Argus paint a vivid picture of the institution, its residents, and what was then a new wave of treatments for the mentally ill.
These new ‘moral’ treatments, placed emphasis on the need for patients to be meaningfully occupied, and to be housed in pleasing surroundings.
For most, this meant being engaged in work. At the Kew Asylum there were also regular balls, with music supplied by a band consisting of asylum residents.
